"I grew up on Long island where summers were spent by the Atlantic Ocean & Long Island Sound where we swam, dove, fished & dug up creatures that needed water for their survival. I would snorkel as a kid, and always dreamed of the day I would deep-sea-dive...until the movie Jaws came out and scared me to death. But what lived in the sea continued to fascinate me. When my children were small I was forced to face my fear head-on when we moved to Miami Beach, living right on the Atlantic Ocean. The kids loved to play everyday, swimming and combing the beach for unusual sea life forms that would wash up after high tide or a storm.This body of work was inspired by my daughter's request for a tattoo of her sun sign Pisces. Designing her tattoo made me remember just how much I loved the sea, along with all its scary and beautiful forms co-existing under the deep blue. It’s survival of the fittest. Beautiful foliage & seaweed, stunning coral, graceful shimmering fishes, octopus & jellyfish, prehistoric-looking creatures, sweet seahorses, and fantasy mermaids & mermen."---Jeanine Maleno
